Nasality in speech and its contribution to speaker individuality

چکیده
The term nasality refers to the timbre of the nasal phonemes. It is also used to express the quality of sound that characterises some speakers. In this paper, we propose to classify nasality in natural speech into four types: phonemic nasality, nasality in assimilation, incidental nasality in the production of voiced plosives, and nasality associated with speaker individuality. Speech sounds recorded separately for oral and nasal outputs were analysed and the four types of nasality were observed individually. In order to investigate the relationship between the nasality in running speech and the perception of speaker similarity, we conducted an experiment. The results revealed that listeners rated speaker similarity exploiting phonemic nasality when it existed in the utterance and also used speakerrelated nasality regardless of the existence of phonemic nasals.

Data Selection with Kurtosis and Nasality Features for Speaker Recognition
We propose new data selection approaches based on speaker discriminability features, including kurtosis and a set of nasality features which exploit spectral properties of nasal speech sounds. Data selected based on the speaker discriminability features are used to implement end-to-end speaker recognition systems, which produce significant improvements when combined with the baseline system (wh...

متن کاملNon-Native Text-to-Speech Preserving Speaker Individuality Based on Partial Correction of Prosodic and Phonetic Characteristics
This paper presents a novel non-native speech synthesis technique that preserves the individuality of a non-native speaker. Crosslingual speech synthesis based on voice conversion or Hidden Markov Model (HMM)-based speech synthesis is a technique to synthesize foreign language speech using a target speaker’s natural speech uttered in his/her mother tongue. Although the technique holds promise t...
متن کاملHigh-Individuality Voice Conversion Based on Concatenative Speech Synthesis
Concatenative speech synthesis is a method that can make speech sound which has naturalness and high-individuality of a speaker by introducing a large speech corpus. Based on this method, in this paper, we propose a voice conversion method whose conversion speech has high-individuality and naturalness. The authors also have two subjective evaluation experiments for evaluating individuality and ...
متن کاملVoice Conversion Based on Speaker-Dependent Restricted Boltzmann Machines
This paper presents a voice conversion technique using speaker-dependent Restricted Boltzmann Machines (RBM) to build highorder eigen spaces of source/target speakers, where it is easier to convert the source speech to the target speech than in the traditional cepstrum space. We build a deep conversion architecture that concatenates the two speakerdependent RBMs with neural networks, expecting ...
